The smile that you send out returns to you, 1982/2023
Computer installation

Upon entering the exhibition, a pair of lips can be seen full screen in front of a column floating in a suspended screen. Randomly controlled by a computer, the lips are smiling or emotionally neutral. The moment of entry determines whether or not one is unexpectedly greeted by an innate human facial expression, the smile.

Hofstetter Kurt - Ich schaue in den Himmel um mich zu erden / I look up to the sky to ground myself
Art Publication, 2021, Philipp Konzett (Ed.), VfmK Verlag für moderne Kunst, Vienna 2021

"… a massive and intriguing monograph exploring of the work of the Vienna-based media art pioneer Hofstetter Kurt. Part theoretical examination, part poetic exploration, it is dense, lyrical, and provocative."
Leonardo Rezension von Azby Brown, Oktober 2021

Hofstetter Kurt's piece of Ambient Media Art shows the irrational simultaneity of dawn and dusk, brought to life by an enstatic flow through a static pair of lips. Only after some time can the essential change in the X-tense image be experienced.
The sky streams of dawn and dusk come from twelve video cameras – the Sunpendulum Time-Eyes, which are positioned around the earth along the Tropic of Cancer.

X-stills, 2023
prints on canvas, stills from different X-tense images at a certain point in time

The sky streams of dawn and dusk at a certain point in time enter into astonishing connections with the respective motif and modulate spatial illusions full of immaterial pictorial sensitivity. Then again, lines dissolve in the sfumato of misty haze or envelop lyrically. They provide glimpses into the past – varying depictions of condensed time intertwined with the sensuality of a lip – visual tactility.
